Reverse osmosis membrane replacement
Most reverse osmosis units include monitoring devices. You'll need reverse osmosis membrane replacement when unacceptable ion levels are reached. Many membranes last for years. In fact, some membranes have been in use for 20 years. It is very rare for all membranes to need replacement at once.
Ro membranes: spiral
Industrial reverse osmosis equipment use spiral wound ro membranes, which are mounted into high pressure vessels, which are fiberglass or stainless steel pressure vessels. Membranes (or films) are stacked, with a spacer mesh between them. The spiral winding provides for high surface area coverage. Water is forced into one end of the cylinder ro membranes by pressure and comes out the other end. Backpressure forces the water through the film where it is collected.
Stainless steel pressure vessels
In order for reverse osmosis to work, high pressure is needed to force water through the filtering membranes. That means they need to be housed in a vessel that can withstand pressure over time. PuroTech has stainless steel pressure vessels that we carry for their promise of quality and housing abilities that are comparable to the Frp vessels.
These vessels are surprisingly lightweight and hold the advantage of a stainless steel exterior that is not affected by ultraviolet light. These housings are usually quite easy to take apart for reverse osmosis membrane replacement or for cleaning.
Professor Reid at UCLA is credited with showing the world that Reverse Osmosis could be used to make potable water from saline solution. Later, Sidney Loeb and Srinivasa Sourirajan brought it to practical use. This was going into the 1960's. Now, globally, millions and millions of gallons of water is produced in this way all across the world.
